ODISHA HOUSE
Sustainable Rammed Earth House, Odisha is envisioned as a low-impact, context-driven retreat set within a six-acre landscape overlooking rolling hillocks and nearby villages. Designed for a couple deeply engaged in local development and livelihood generation, the house functions both as a private residence and a creative refuge for community engagement—a place where people can gather, collaborate, and learn.

Positioned gently atop the land, with a dense forested hill forming its backdrop, the house is conceived to emerge from the earth rather than sit upon it. Built using locally sourced rammed earth—well suited to Odisha’s soil conditions—the architecture minimizes environmental impact while offering exceptional thermal comfort. The form balances modern spatial expression with regional architectural sensibilities, allowing the building to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.
Two semicircular rammed earth walls define the structure, between which courtyards, living spaces, private rooms, and services are carefully layered. This configuration brings in abundant daylight and cross-ventilation while maintaining privacy. Responding to the region’s heavy rainfall, inclined roofs finished with terracotta tiles enable efficient water drainage and reinforce the vernacular character.
Curvilinear forms naturally create shared, amphitheater-like spaces where workshops, discussions, and community activities can unfold, without intruding upon the family’s private zones. Internal courtyards, shaded walkways, and a central pond enhance microclimatic comfort, while a reverse-sloped terrace allows occupants to ascend, pause, and take in expansive views across the landscape.
Rooted in the land, shaped by climate, and guided by social intent, the house stands as a quiet expression of sustainability, community, and belonging.
